For his outstanding productivity, the high impact of his research, his international exposure, and his contributions to community life outside of the lab during his PhD studies in the Islam Lab, Fares was awarded the 2024 Armand Frappier Outstanding Student Award. This is given to the top microbiology graduate student in Canada by the Canadian Society of Microbiologists (CSM).
The award was presented at the 73rd Annual Conference of the CSM, held at Western University in London, Ontario from Jun. 23-26, 2024. As part of the award, Fares was invited to give a Keynote Address on his paradigm-shifting work on the biosynthesis, export, and physiological importance of bacterial polysaccharides.
As Fares was the first PhD student to graduate from the Islam Lab at INRS, Fares' award was extra special for both him and his PI Salim as Salim had also won the same award when he finished his own PhD in 2013 at the University of Guelph. #ProudPhDPapa!
