Congratulations to Fares on earning his MSc in Applied Microbiology!

Fares' MSc is the first degree obtained by a student in the Islam Lab.  Congrats!  To infinity...and beyond (or at least to a PhD)!

Come read about how the gliding motility apparatus in M. xanthus is coupled to the substratum, and how force from inner-membrane motors can "finally" traverse the cell envelope!  Integrin(-like) proteins and focal move bacteria!  And is that a new bacterial secretion system?

Welcome to the lab for Nicholas Bradette, starting his co-op summer project this semester. Congrats on the INRS Excellence Award!

Nicholas is joining our team for the summer from Collège La Cité in nearby Ottawa, for his co-op project placement.  He won an Excellence Award from the INRS which will help fund his time "abroad" in our lab.  Congrats and welcome aboard! (Now we have a Nicholas and a Nicolas in the lab.  Nah, shouldn't be confusing at all...)

Our paper "Modulation of bacterial multicellularity via spatio-specific polysaccharide secretion" has just been accepted for publication in PLOS Biology!  Several firsts:
• First 1st-author publication for Salim related to his postdoc work in Marseille, France
• First 1st-author publication for Fares Saïdi

• First peer-reviewed publication for Fares Saïdi

• First corresponding-author publication for the Islam Laboratory

• First publication from our lab of MANY to come in the years ahead!  Good work team!!!

The lab is open once again...

The Quebec provincial government has authorized the resumption of research activities during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.  To reopen, we've had to design a socially-distanced shift rotation for the lab to minimize the number of people physically present in the lab spaces at any given time.  It's an adjustment for sure, but we're making it work.  Making sure to stay healthy!

Congratulations to Rose Laverdure on winning a 4-year PhD studentship from the FRQNT!

This doctoral studentship from the Fonds de Recherche - Nature et technologies (FRQNT) will cover up to 4 years of PhD studies at INRS.  Even more impressive, Rose's application was ranked 1st in the competition!  Good on you Rose! Félicitations!

Congratulations to Rose Laverdure on passing her MBA6005 project-update seminar for her MSc studies!

Rose has now finished the last official course requirement for her MSc.  Time to start wrapping up the benchwork and write a MSc thesis.
